How To Keep Safe Amid Spike In Crime

Car jacking and muggings are up 65% to 85% in some parts of the U.S. Here’s a few tips to remember when you are in your vehicle, parking lots, and taking public transit.

  1. Park close to your location. The closer you are to the door the better.

  2. Park close to a lamp post when it is dark or getting dark outside.

  3. If possible park close to a security post.

  4. Look around at your surroundings when you get in and out of your vehicle. Make sure no one is watching you or following you.

  5. Put your keys and phone in your pocket and not your purse, keep them on your person. You have a better chance to get away with your vehicle if someone takes your purse.

  6. Make it a good habit to lock your doors first when you get in your vehicle. Always keep your vehicle doors locked even when you are driving.

  7. Don’t warm your vehicle or stay in your car while your are warming it up. The exhaust pipe is a signal for thieves to steal. Stay vigilant.

  8. In public transit, while taking the stairs always move bags, and your purse to the front of you and lock purse.

  9. Take your ear buds out, they take away one of your senses. You need to hear everything going on around you.

  10. In public transit don’t stand near the track. Stay at least 6’ away from yellow line.

  11. Sit in the front of public transit. If you can’t sit in the front sit in the middle and not where the door opens. Thieves look for bags and purses to grab when the door opens.

  12. Make it a good habit and always bring your self defense key chain set, stun gun, or other self protection tools with you every day to stay safe.
